iPhone SE 4 Might Be Rebranded as iPhone 16E: Here’s Why It Makes Sense

This week, various sources have started suggesting that the upcoming iPhone SE, anticipated for release this spring, might not retain the ‘iPhone SE’ name. Reports indicate it could instead be referred to as the ‘iPhone 16E’. While this may seem like an odd rumor, it might actually resonate well considering the information surrounding the iPhone SE 4.

Rumors about iPhone SE 4

To summarize, here’s what we know about the iPhone SE 4:

This would undoubtedly represent the most significant upgrade in the iPhone SE line. Apple hasn’t revamped the design of the iPhone SE since the second-generation model was launched in 2020. The iPhone SE 3, released in 2022, maintained the same design and simply incorporated an A15 Bionic chip and 5G capability. Therefore, the iPhone SE 4 will mark the first major refresh of the iPhone SE in five years.

Is it too good to be true?

While I don’t question the validity of the iPhone SE 4 rumors, I have consistently harbored doubts regarding the proposed pricing. Many speculate a price around $499 for the iPhone SE 4, but that logic never quite fits with my understanding. Currently, the iPhone 14 is priced at $599, and the iPhone 15 is at $699.

How could a more modern device, featuring components from both models (along with a newer chipset), be priced significantly lower?

There are two factors that might lower Apple’s costs for the iPhone SE 4:

  • Utilizing new in-house modems, allowing them to move away from Qualcomm’s more expensive modems.
  • Not using Samsung OLED panels, instead opting for displays from BOE and LG, which are more budget-friendly.

These components are among the costliest in the iPhone. It’s quite feasible that Apple could offer the iPhone SE 4 at $499 while still maintaining reasonable profit margins. However, the larger question remains: would they?

iPhone 16E in Apple’s Portfolio

Should the iPhone SE 4 debut at $499, it would be a remarkable $300 less than the iPhone 16’s price of $799. This suggests that buyers would be paying a $300 premium solely for features like Dynamic Island, the Action Button, and an ultra-wide camera. It appears that the iPhone SE 4 would provide an exceptional value in comparison to the iPhone 16.

This is where the idea of it being named 16E becomes logical. By moving away from the SE branding, Apple could price the device at $599 with minimal backlash. Additionally, the iPhone 15 will likely remain available even after the launch of the iPhone SE 4/16E. By renaming it 16E, Apple can clearly illustrate that the iPhone 15 is an older model, lacking support for Apple Intelligence, even though it might be priced higher.

Historically, the iPhone SE has been associated with smaller devices, and with the anticipated 6.1-inch display, it’s hard to label it as such.

The name iPhone 16E would also present a more straightforward option for customers, indicating that this phone is part of the latest lineup. This could potentially boost sales. The current SE branding doesn’t effectively convey the product’s age unless one investigates its background, a situation Apple could alleviate by incorporating years into naming conventions instead of generational numbers.

Conclusion

Personally, I favor the “iPhone 16E” designation. The “iPhone SE” label often comes with a perception of being a less premium product, which may have deterred some consumers. With the first redesign of the iPhone SE in five years, this could present an excellent opportunity to change public perception of the line.
