Is Apple Developing a Bigger iMac?

Following the Mac’s transition to Apple Silicon, Apple replaced the 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac models with a single 24-inch version. Many anticipated that a larger iMac would eventually be introduced, possibly a 30 or 32-inch variant, or even an updated iMac Pro. However, that has yet to come to pass.

While it’s been three years since the 27-inch iMac was phased out and Apple has announced it will not produce another 27-inch version, there’s still a glimmer of hope. Let’s delve into this topic.

Apple has Confirmed No New 27-inch iMac

In November 2023, shortly after unveiling the new M3 iMac, Apple made a noteworthy statement to The Verge. The company rarely comments on future product directions, but in this instance, they explicitly stated that they have no plans to produce a new 27-inch iMac.

During various presentations, Apple has alluded to the 24-inch iMac serving as an excellent midway point between the 21.5-inch and 27-inch models.

However, an important detail is that these comments specifically focus on the 27-inch iMac.

Strangely enough, Apple has not ruled out the possibility of a larger iMac altogether, only a 27-inch version.

Rumors of a Larger iMac Resurface

This week, in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman noted that Apple “remains interested” in catering to the professional market, hinting that a larger-screen iMac might be on the horizon:

The company remains interested in the professional market, though, and it’s planning new Mac Pro and Mac Studio models. Apple also will probably eventually get around to offering a larger-screen iMac.

Furthermore, Gurman mentioned in August that Apple is ‘exploring’ the idea of a larger iMac model:

A larger iMac remains something Apple is exploring as well, but it’s unclear if that will be an M4 product or something that comes the following year or later.

Towards the end of 2023, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculated that a “higher-end 32-inch mini LED display iMac” could debut in 2025. Given the lack of updates since then, it’s likely that Apple has delayed this further. Nevertheless, it’s not completely off the table.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the future of a larger iMac remains uncertain. We can conclude that while it’s not currently in the pipeline, the possibility remains, especially given Apple’s comments, indicating it won’t be a 27-inch model.

If a larger iMac does launch, it is likely not to occur until at least next year.
