Since Jony Ive departed Apple to establish his own design studio, much time has elapsed, yet his influence on technology remains indelible. Recently, he shared insights on BBC’s Desert Island Discs, reflecting on his significant projects at Apple and his bond with Steve Jobs.
Jony Ive Continues to Reflect on Jobs and is Eager for His New Project with OpenAI
Ive expressed that it’s challenging to avoid pondering “what Steve would do,” despite Jobs advising him not to. “Whenever I think, ‘I wonder what Steve would do?’ I remind myself, ‘Ha! I’m doing exactly what you didn’t want,’” he recounted. He noted, “It was incredible that, despite my limited communication abilities, Steve grasped my thoughts and feelings.”
Regarding the Mac, Ive reminisced about his initial experience with a Macintosh: “I was simply amazed that I could sense the people behind its creation.” He also discussed the process of designing the first iMac alongside Steve Jobs, emphasizing that its translucent design resonated more with users than the technical specifications.
The acclaimed designer reflected on his sense of accomplishment in having transformed the world with the iPhone, another landmark creation of his.
“Innovation inherently brings unforeseen consequences, and I take pride in the many positive impacts it has had, the empowerment and freedom it gifts to countless individuals. While unintended negative outcomes might exist, they do not diminish my sense of responsibility or my role in shaping the decisions I make today and those I will make in the future… One must possess a specific resolve and discipline not to be lured in… My family has worked diligently to acknowledge the power of these tools and to wield them responsibly; it’s a challenge we all face.”
On the topic of AI, Ive noted that people require “time to comprehend and respond.” He confirmed that he has been collaborating on a new AI device initiative with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Although he kept the project’s details under wraps during the interview, he mentioned it’s the first time in his career that he feels “inspired by capabilities in this manner.”
Ive departed from Apple in 2019, after a remarkable 20-year tenure. He now leads LoveFrom, his design firm, which has collaborated with renowned brands like Airbnb, Moncler, and even Ferrari. While his firm entered into a consultancy agreement with Apple, it concluded in 2022.
