Jony Ive, Apple’s former design lead, has generally steered clear of fresh technology projects since launching his studio, LoveFrom. However, initial insights into his upcoming “personalized AI device” suggest that he may be venturing into familiar territory through collaboration with OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Ive’s AI product concepts are in early stages, but draw comparisons to ‘phones’
According to Stephanie Palazzolo and Jessica E. Lessin at The Information:
In recent weeks, OpenAI has had discussions about acquiring a startup that CEO Sam Altman has collaborated with ex-Apple designer Jony Ive’s studio to create an artificial intelligence-driven personal device, according to two individuals familiar with the negotiations. […]
The designs for the AI device remain in preliminary stages and are not yet finalized, as noted by the sources. Proposed concepts include a “phone” that lacks a screen and AI-integrated home devices. However, others associated with the project assert that it is “not a phone.”
This second paragraph illustrates the innovative potential of Ive’s upcoming project, as sources from The Information seem to struggle to find existing products for comparison.
The notion of it being a phone “without a screen” may seem ludicrous at first, but it also indicates the product’s intended direction.
While it may not technically be categorized as a phone—according to certain sources’ assertions—it could still function similarly to one.
Unlike past AI devices like the Humane Ai Pin, it appears that Ive’s new creation might transcend being merely a niche addition to the smartphone ecosystem. It could aim to replace smartphones altogether.
Of course, development is still in the early phases, and information is limited. However, the preliminary signs indicate a device that is genuinely exciting and purposefully crafted for the AI era.
It’s not surprising that OpenAI is contemplating the acquisition of io products, the company led by Sam Altman that is collaborating with Ive. Since it’s already powered by OpenAI’s technology, integrating io products into OpenAI makes practical sense.
