With the new year underway, speculation about the forthcoming iPhone 17 series is heating up. Today, Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed new information regarding the remarkably slim iPhone 17 Air, suggesting it could be even thinner than previously anticipated.
The new iPhone may approach the thickness of M4 iPad Pros
According to Ming-Chi Kuo’s post on Medium today, Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 17 Air might surpass our expectations in terms of thinness.
Earlier reports had suggested that the iPhone 17 Air would be approximately 6.25mm thick. This aligns with previous discussions, making it the slimmest iPhone to date, surpassing the iPhone 6’s thickness of 6.9mm.
However, Kuo indicates it could be even sleeker, with “the thinnest portion at around 5.5mm.”
This measurement brings it closer to the profiles of the M4 iPad Pro models.
- 11-inch iPad Pro: 5.3mm
- 13-inch iPad Pro: 5.1mm
At 5.5mm, this figure is considerably less than what was commonly believed.
It’s important to note that this applies only to ‘the thinnest part’ of the device.
Historically, the only significant bump on iPhones is the camera. The 17 Air is expected to retain a camera bump, although it will feature a streamlined camera system.
If 5.5mm is the measurement of the thinnest segment, we can assume this applies to most of the iPhone’s body, excluding the camera.
Kuo further states that such a thin design likely indicates the device will be eSIM only, a detail we’ve come across previously.
Should this rumor hold true, it will enhance the iPhone 17 Air’s appeal as a sleek alternative to the more feature-rich iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
