Apple has introduced its new C1 modem with the launch of the iPhone 16e just yesterday. However, another Apple-designed chip is on the horizon, and according to a recent report, it will be included in the entire iPhone 17 range.
New Apple-designed Wi-Fi chip set to launch with the full iPhone 17 series
Speculation has been circulating for some time regarding Apple’s connectivity endeavors, which have led to key internal projects.
These include the 5G modem initiatives, which encompass the newly introduced C1 and future C-class models.
Moreover, Apple has also been developing its proprietary Wi-Fi technology, and recent reports suggest it is primed for release with the full iPhone 17 series.
Ming-Chi Kuo shared in a post on X:
After Qualcomm, Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chips will increasingly be supplanted by Apple’s internal chips. My latest industry research reveals that all new iPhone 17 models set to launch in the second half of 2025 will incorporate Apple’s proprietary Wi-Fi chips (compared to just the basic iPhone 17 adopting Apple’s C1 modem). Besides reducing costs, the transition to in-house Wi-Fi chips will bolster connectivity across Apple devices.
Earlier reports indicated that the new Wi-Fi chip would be featured in select iPhone 17 models, although details regarding which ones were sparse.
Now, it appears Apple intends to fully transition away from Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chips across its entire fall lineup, which includes the iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.
Kuo mentions that this change is expected to “enhance connectivity across Apple devices,” a statement that, while somewhat vague, remains intriguing.
The C1 chip delivered enhancements in battery performance, raising questions about potential gains we might see from Apple’s Wi-Fi chip and the specific connectivity improvements it may offer.
