An early 1990s guitar destroyed by late US rock band Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain sold at auction this weekend for almost $600,000 (Rs 4,96,73,100), according to the BBC. The broken black Fender Stratocaster was bought for $596,900 (Rs 4,94,16,455) by an unknown buyer at the auction held on Saturday at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.
As Nirvana was finishing up the early 1990s recording of their breakthrough album Nevermind, Mr. Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, destroyed the guitar.
Kurt Cobain Smashed The Guitar Back In The 90s
The broken instrument has been repaired, but it is no longer usable, Julien’s Auctions’ Kody Frederick told AFP earlier this month.
According to People, Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, all autographed the guitar. Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees received a second inscription by Cobain, who purposefully misspelled his name.
The message is, “Hell-o Mark! Kurdt Kobain: “Love, Your Pal, Washed-up Rockstar.”Here, where the neck sort of attaches, you can see the break that occurred when he smashed the guitar down, as well as down here on the bottom, where he slammed the instrument down. When Kurt Cobain performed on stage, he was a machine.
On stage, you could see and feel the man’s rage. Furthermore, you could tell by the way he handled his instruments. In a bizarre sense, this broken component from this broken musician truly represented this hard-partying age of music, according to Mr. Frederick.
The acoustic guitar Mr. Cobain played during his illustrious MTV Unplugged performance in the second half of 1993 sold for $6 million two years ago. He committed suicide in April 1994. He was 27 years old.
