I’ve been using my M4 Mac mini for two weeks, and it’s astonishing how much power fits into such a compact device. While my uses might be somewhat unique, this versatility is precisely what makes the M4 mini appealing, especially considering its price point (currently $499). Here are my reflections after two weeks of usage.
It fits in anywhere you want it
The M4 Mac mini currently resides on my nightstand, right next to my M4 iPad Pro, which I’ve affectionately dubbed the “M4 shelf” (not really).
Its compact size allows the Mac mini to fit seamlessly into various spaces:
- on a spacious or small desk
- beneath a desk
- on a TV stand
- in a bookshelf
- or yes, even on a nightstand
While a nightstand may not seem like a typical spot for a Mac mini, it actually presents some unique challenges—such as monitor placement, which I’ll discuss shortly, and port accessibility.
Thankfully, Apple’s M4 redesign includes two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front, making connections much more convenient than in previous models and enhancing placement versatility. It’s a thoughtful addition that enhances functionality.
It can easily blend in
Having my M4 mini and iPad Pro side by side is particularly effective, as my iPad serves as the primary display for the Mac mini.
I prefer not to be tethered to a desk all day; I enjoy working from various locations around the house, and I frequently work outside as well.
Therefore, the iPad Pro—with its cellular connectivity—has been my go-to productivity device. It’s only logical that it doubles as my main Mac display.
I have both wired and wireless options for connecting the devices, which perfectly accommodates my flexible work habits.
Working through the iPad allows the Mac mini to almost become invisible. It sits on my nightstand, and I can easily access it from any location.
While I mostly operate in iPadOS, the macOS environment is just a click away when needed, functioning like another app on the iPad.
It’s a powerful and impressive machine
Despite keeping my Mac mini tucked away on a nightstand and accessing it via my iPad Pro, I do not mean to underestimate its power.
This machine truly is a powerhouse. It features:
- the latest M4 chip
- 16GB of RAM
- an upgraded Neural Engine for Apple Intelligence
- hardware-accelerated ray tracing for gaming
- impressive I/O capabilities with support for up to three displays
- and, of course, all the functionality that macOS offers
Considering its compact 5×5 dimensions and ability to blend in effortlessly, it’s an impressive engineering achievement.
Coming soon: Mac Virtual Display in visionOS 2.2
This discussion only begins to highlight the capabilities of the M4 Mac mini. One feature I’m eagerly anticipating is the enhanced Mac Virtual Display support in visionOS 2.2.
Given how unobtrusive the M4 Mac mini is, it makes a great companion for a Vision Pro. While current compatibility allows you to use them together, the upcoming improvements in visionOS 2.2 will elevate the experience even further.
Whether you’re using your Mac through an iPad, a Vision Pro, or sticking to the traditional desk and monitor setup, it’s clear that the M4 Mac mini stands out as a distinctive computer in Apple’s lineup.
