M4 Mac Users Report Problems with Ultrawide Monitors

Since Apple released the new M4 Macs, numerous users have reported unforeseen problems, particularly regarding compatibility with ultrawide monitors.

M4 Macs appear to struggle with ultrawide 5K2K monitors

As highlighted by various users on platforms like the Apple Community forums and Reddit, and supported by a reader from DMN, it seems M4 Macs do not fully support certain ultrawide monitors, specifically those with a 5K2K (5120 x 2160) resolution.

Reports indicate that M4 Macs fail to provide the correct resolution settings for these monitors, resulting in a blurry interface and text. Interestingly, the same monitors function perfectly with older Mac models, including both Intel and Apple Silicon variants. When connected to an M4 Mac, these monitors don’t operate in HiDPI mode, which enhances the sharpness of the display.

While many of the complaints stem from Mac mini users, M4 MacBook Pro owners are also experiencing analogous issues.

“Although I can select the identical resolution on my Mac Mini M4, the HiDPI option is absent, and it noticeably looks worse,” remarked one user, who noted that the HiDPI feature works fine on their M1 MacBook Pro. “I’m encountering the same issue – MacBook Pro M1 Max: no problems. MacBook Pro M4 Max: the 3840 x 1620 resolution is not available,” stated another user.

Some users have found workarounds to enable HiDPI using third-party software like BetterDisplay. However, this solution can lead to issues such as the refresh rate being reduced from 75Hz to 60Hz. Apple has yet to officially recognize this issue. For now, the most advisable option for those with ultrawide 5K2K monitors is to refrain from purchasing M4 Macs until a resolution is provided.
