Apple has unveiled its latest update for Mac users: macOS Sequoia 15.3. This release introduces Genmoji support, modifications to AI notification summaries, and other enhancements. Here’s a breakdown of the new features.
Genmoji now available on Mac
Genmoji, widely regarded as a standout feature of Apple Intelligence, debuted in December with iOS and iPadOS 18.2, but was previously unavailable on the Mac.
With the 15.3 update, full Genmoji functionality has finally arrived on macOS.
Within the Messages app and anywhere the emoji keyboard is accessible, you can now design custom emojis to share. Just input a description of your concept, and the AI will generate multiple emoji options for you to select from.
Additionally, Genmoji have received a recent upgrade, permitting users to utilize any emoji as a tapback reaction in Apple’s Messages app.
Revisions to notification summaries
In general, Apple’s introduction of AI capabilities has been well-received, with one notable exception: notification summaries.
Though I find these summaries one of the most useful AI features, they can sometimes be quite flawed, occasionally resulting in comedic yet also serious issues.
As with other components of Apple Intelligence, notification summaries are still categorized as ‘beta.’ With the 15.3 update, Apple has clearly indicated their beta status during setup, and System Settings now display a warning that these summaries “may contain errors.”
To help users distinguish an AI-generated summary, Apple now italicizes the text of notification summaries, while standard notifications remain unaffected.
Moreover, users can conveniently disable notifications for specific apps by utilizing the “Turn Off Summaries” option available directly in the notification.
A removed Apple Intelligence feature
It’s not common for a software update to eliminate features, but macOS 15.3 does that—at least for now.
Due to ongoing issues related to AI notification summaries primarily affecting news applications, Apple has entirely disabled these summaries for both news and entertainment applications.
You are unable to manually turn this feature back on, as Apple has completely removed it until a future update involves improved AI models.
Fix for the Calculator app
Lastly, macOS 15.3 addresses a bug in the Calculator app that emerged with last year’s release.
When macOS Sequoia was initially launched, it introduced several enhancements to the Calculator. However, one unintended issue was that repeatedly hitting the equals sign stopped functioning as expected.
This has now been resolved. For instance, entering 2 x 2 and then pressing equals will yield 4; press equals again, and you’ll get 8, followed by 16, and so forth.
Overview of macOS 15.3
The latest macOS update continues the trend of incorporating Apple Intelligence improvements into the Mac. Although the number of new features and adjustments is not as extensive as those seen in recent updates, this is typically the case for Apple’s winter releases. With 15.3 launched, we can expect beta versions soon for what promises to be a more extensive update: macOS 15.4.
