The word “Memphis” is enough grounds to get banned on Twitter. A weird incident has been reported that has seen the popular social media website ban accounts for twelve hours when a tweet is posted containing the name.
Users were left surprised and confused as the phenomenon struck suddenly. The name is shared by quite a few personalities and organizations, along with a city. Several screenshots showing the ban were tweeted following the claim. Most discovered it after shared tweets of Memphis Depay, a soccer player for the Netherlands, were flagged.
The Replies To “Memphis”
Organizations made humorous responses to the incident, with Olympique Lyonnais, Depay’s club, asking whether it is appropriate to mention the player. Memphis Grizzlies, the basketball team from Tennessee, also referred to the incident by stating the “the m word” in one of their tweets.
There has been a reply from Twitter on the issue as reported by a singular user. Official support claimed that it was an error within Twitter’s system. However, no further details were provided. Also, the tweet seems to have been removed. Eventually, Twitter issued an apology and said that the issue has been resolved.
The bug, however, seems to persist. A report details how the functionality of the banned account continues to be limited, and will probably remain so for half a day. Twitter is yet to give any clarification on the issue.
Furthermore, the bug only seems to affect non-verified users. Images with “Memphis” in their descriptions also seem to be exempt from the issue.
Users are viewing the incident as ironic. Twitter has long been asked to administer the words being said on the platform. Instead, harmless words like “Memphis” is seeing swift action.
