Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently released a video announcing upcoming changes to the platform policies regarding Instagram and Threads. Notably, he disclosed that the company will be shifting from traditional fact-checking methods to a Community Notes model, which seems to be in the process of being implemented within the Threads app.
According to developer and researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, the Community Note feature is currently found in a hidden state in the Threads app for iPhone users. This feature allows users to add notes to any post on Threads, with the interface indicating that the “note is anonymous” and providing a link to a support article on Instagram for further details.
The article mentions, “If you encounter a post that may be misleading or unclear, you can contribute a note with additional information, a suggestion, or an insight that could benefit others. If your note is deemed helpful, it may be published alongside the post.”
Within the article, users will also have the option to join the waitlist for the Community Notes program. Meta suggests that this shift will empower “individuals from various backgrounds to determine when posts may be misleading and require further context.”
Last week, Zuckerberg acknowledged that his inspiration for introducing Community Notes on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads was influenced by the similar feature found on X (formerly known as Twitter), owned by Elon Musk. The rollout of this feature is expected to commence for users in the US “over the coming months,” with plans for expansion into additional countries next year.
In addition to removing fact-checking protocols across Meta’s social media platforms, Zuckerberg has also indicated that restrictions on certain subjects, including politics and human rights, will be relaxed. Furthermore, the company has disbanded its diversity, equality, and inclusion initiative, a decision that has faced significant backlash from users.
Currently, no timeline has been provided regarding when Meta will start displaying Community Notes on Threads and other platforms.
