Meta Unveils New ‘Edits’ App Ahead of TikTok and CapCut Ban, Set to Launch Next Month

Today, Meta has announced Edits, a brand new mobile video editing platform. This disclosure arrives just hours after the US banned TikTok (which also impacts CapCut) – although TikTok is temporarily being restored.

Meta has often opted to hold back new features until compelled to act, and this situation is no exception. With an unexpected announcement on this Sunday afternoon, the company introduced Edits, a mobile-oriented editing solution designed to compete with the well-known CapCut tool.

Adam Moserri, Instagram’s head, shared the new ‘Edits’ app today via Threads, calling it a tool for “those passionate about creating videos on their phone.” He emphasized, “There’s a lot happening right now, but regardless of the circumstances, our responsibility is to provide the best tools for creators,” likely alluding to the TikTok and CapCut ban.

As for features, Edits will provide the following, according to Moserri’s update:

  • A dedicated inspiration section
  • An additional tab for tracking your ideas
  • A “significantly improved camera” for video recording
  • “All the editing tools you’d anticipate”
  • The capacity to share drafts with friends and fellow creators
  • Simple export to Instagram, along with detailed metrics for Reels content

Aside from these insights, further details are scarce. It’s expected that Meta will reveal more in the upcoming weeks. The company has noted that it has been testing the application with creators recently.

Edits is now available for pre-order on the App Store and is set to launch on iOS in February, per Meta’s announcement. Nonetheless, the App Store pre-order page indicates a release in March.

No specific timeline for an Android version has been provided, except that it will be available “soon.”
