Microsoft Facilitates File Sharing Between iPhones and Windows PCs

On Wednesday, Microsoft introduced a new feature that will soon be available in Windows, allowing users to effortlessly share files between an iPhone and a PC, akin to Apple’s AirDrop, which is limited to Apple devices.

iPhone and Windows PCs file sharing is now possible

In a recent blog post, Microsoft outlined that a beta version of Phone Link is being rolled out for users in the Windows Insider program, which includes this new file-sharing capability between iPhones and PCs. For those who are not aware, Phone Link is an application from Microsoft that enables users to connect their mobile phones, whether they operate on iOS or Android, to their PC wirelessly.

After pairing the devices, users will have access to notifications and the ability to answer calls directly from their PC. Soon, Phone Link will also facilitate file sharing between the two devices. On the Windows platform, users will see their phone as an option when they initiate a file share. On the iOS side, the Link to Windows app will function as a sharing extension.

According to Microsoft, this functionality requires an iPhone running iOS 16 or newer along with version 1.24112.73 or later of the Link to Windows app available for iOS. Additionally, the Phone Link app on Windows must be version 1.24112.89.0 or higher, and currently, participants must be registered in the Windows Insider beta program. Ultimately, this feature will be extended to all users of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

This update is particularly beneficial for iPhone users with a Windows PC, as transferring files between an iPhone and non-Apple devices can often be quite tricky.

The Link to Windows app for iOS is available for free in the App Store. Further information regarding Phone Link can be accessed on Microsoft’s official website.
