On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled a new offering named “Windows 365 Link,” which can be likened to a compact desktop PC, resembling the recently launched Apple M4 Mac mini. However, while the Mac mini operates as a standalone computer, Microsoft’s version functions solely via the cloud.
Microsoft Debuts a Mac mini Rival – Sort of
This device was introduced during the Microsoft Ignite 2024 conference, aimed at developers and IT professionals. Visually, it resembles the latest Mac mini closely in size, presenting as a small black box featuring several ports at the back. However, the internal components of both devices are markedly different.
In contrast to the Mac mini, which boasts the powerful M4 or M4 Pro chips, the Windows 365 Link makes do with very basic specifications. This is due to its reliance on cloud streaming for the Windows experience instead of housing a local operating system.
Microsoft positions Windows 365 Link as a cost-effective solution for corporate clients. The concept is to provide a tiny, inexpensive device that connects to the internet and streams content from a significantly more powerful computer, effectively serving as a device for accessing cloud virtual machines.
Details about the technical specifications remain sparse. Currently, it is known that the device includes 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an unspecified Intel processor. Nonetheless, these specs are not particularly critical since the hardware’s primary role is to facilitate cloud streaming.
On the back, the Windows 365 Link is equipped with a USB-C port, two USB-A ports, DisplayPort, HDMI, and Ethernet. It also supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for enhanced wireless connectivity.
According to The Verge, Microsoft suggests that this new device enhances security for IT users since all data is stored encrypted in the cloud, leaving no offline data that could be compromised. However, this also means that the PC will become inoperable without an internet connection.
The Windows 365 Link is set to launch next year, priced at $349. Additionally, users will need a Windows 365 subscription, which starts at $28 per month.
While the concept is intriguing, it’s hard to overlook the comparison to the Mac mini, which is only $250 more but offers superior hardware (and operates on a local OS). As I previously noted here on DMN, the latest Mac mini is an exceptional desktop option for most users. “It’s powerful, elegant, compact, and offered at an attractive price.”
