My Top Mac Accessory: Unmatched Comfort Compared to Other Peripherals

At the beginning of this year, I shared with my doctor that I’ve been suffering from persistent severe wrist pain since the previous summer. A few weeks later, I underwent a nerve conduction study using a machine that delivered gentle shocks. As anticipated, the diagnosis revealed moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.

This led me to abandon my trackpad and revisit the Logi MX Ergo wireless trackball mouse that I had purchased a couple of years ago. Its stationary position on my desk and two adjustable angles made it far more comfortable than a standard mouse or trackpad.

Reliable and Respected Peripheral

While exploring potential surgery options to relieve my wrist pain, I used the Logi MX Ergo for all my desktop Mac tasks and most of my MacBook work.

By the summer, I began to notice a significant reduction in wrist pain for the first time in a year. I believe spending more time at my desk for work made a considerable difference, largely because of the Logi MX Ergo.

The only downside? I had to search for a micro USB cable every few months when the mouse ran out of battery. As probably the last device still utilizing this port, the Logi MX Ergo became a hassle for a different, though less physically taxing, reason.

Nonetheless, the benefits outweighed the inconvenience until recently. I discovered that Logitech had introduced the Logi MX Ergo S, a nearly identical mouse featuring a USB-C port instead of a micro USB port for charging. This upgrade opened up a path to an even better experience with the Logi MX Ergo.

Embracing USB-C

Logitech kindly provided a review sample of the enhanced S version a couple of weeks ago. My first impression? Charging via USB-C before using it was incredibly convenient. One cable on my desk now charges my iPhone, iPad, AirPods, keyboard, and many other devices. Amazing!

During this time, I was briefly using another mouse that lacked the same ergonomic features. With no severe wrist pain to contend with, it was manageable.

However, in recent days, my carpal tunnel symptoms have flared up severely, resembling a throbbing toothache radiating to all my fingers. While I’m not ready for surgery yet, I’ve resumed wearing the brace I was prescribed a year ago, and it’s offering some relief.

Today, I decided to give the Logi MX Ergo S a try to see if it would provide any comfort. My wrist and hand expressed immediate gratitude. Although many people I know tease me about using a trackball mouse from the ’90s (not true, but my nerves and bones might be!), I’m just thankful for how pleasant it feels to manipulate my cursor during this flare-up.

Beyond Just Ergonomics

Since the MX Ergo S remains fixed during use, it’s also perfect for controlling a cursor on both an iPad and Apple Vision Pro when away from my desk. There’s no need for a flat surface with ample space to maneuver a mouse.

I’m open to experimenting with more ergonomic peripherals in the future, but for now, the Logi MX Ergo and MX Ergo S have proven to be my reliable solution for alleviating the finger pain and wrist discomfort that accompany over a decade of spending at least 40 hours per week at a computer.
