The latest MacBook Air from Apple is now available, featuring an upgrade to the M4 chip alongside a more affordable price point. Here are some additional insights to consider.
Support for External Displays
Previously, the M1 MacBook Air could only connect to a single external monitor, a limitation echoed in the M2 model. However, last year’s M3 MacBook Air allowed for dual external displays, but only when the laptop was closed.
The M4 MacBook Air addresses these issues definitively, with Apple stating:
The MacBook Air allows users to easily manage a multi-display configuration, making content interaction seamless. Whether you’re a business professional juggling multiple windows or a student working on a project with various applications, the MacBook Air now supports up to two 6K external displays in addition to its built-in Liquid Retina display.
According to Apple’s technical specifications:
- Supports full native resolution on the built-in display with 1 billion colors and:
- Up to two external displays at resolutions of 6K at 60Hz
- Thunderbolt 4 digital video output
- Native DisplayPort 1.4 support via USB-C
Wi-Fi 6E Compatibility
Much like the M3 MacBook Air, the M4 model also supports Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, as it does not yet support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard. Currently, only the iPhone 16 series models have Wi-Fi 7 compatibility within Apple’s product lineup.
MagSafe Charging
The M4 MacBook Air is introduced in a fresh sky blue shade, replacing space gray in Apple’s offerings. A color-coordinated USB-C to MagSafe cable is included with the purchase of the sky blue MacBook Air.
Additionally, Apple has begun selling a USB-C to MagSafe charging cable separately at a price of $49. This is a useful option for those who may want an extra cable for their new MacBook Air or those looking for a matching sky blue cable for an existing Mac.
Simplified Setup Process
With the recent launch of the macOS 15.4 beta, DMN highlighted a new proximity setup feature that allows users to set up a new Mac using a nearby iPhone or iPad. In the recent press release for the M4 MacBook Air, Apple confirmed this helpful functionality:
Next month, macOS Sequoia 15.4 will streamline the setup process for the new MacBook Air with iPhone. By simply bringing your iPhone close to the Mac, users can quickly log into their Apple Account and transfer files, photos, messages, passwords, and more to their new MacBook Air.
