Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is set to unveil AirTag 2 around “mid-next year.” While the overall design will remain largely unchanged, there will be significant enhancements over the original model in three primary areas.
This isn’t the first mention of AirTag 2, but it’s the first time we have a clear insight into Apple’s intentions.
Apple launched the original AirTag in early 2021, following nearly two years of speculation and leaks that left many wondering if the product would ever materialize. Back in 2019, the B389 codename surfaced, along with various references in iOS 13 and supporting leaks.
The upcoming AirTag iteration is codenamed B589, and according to Bloomberg, it has successfully passed manufacturing tests. This suggests that the product is on the verge of being released, featuring three notable upgrades:
- Enhanced range
- Upgraded wireless chip
- Stronger privacy measures
Improved range and a better wireless chip are expected advancements. However, it is encouraging to see Apple prioritizing privacy as well.
Gurman highlights that some users have misused the device for stalking purposes, with reports of individuals modifying AirTags to disable the speaker completely. It is hoped that Apple will proactively address these issues in the new version.
