Hands-On Experience with the Nintendo Switch 2

After almost ten years, Nintendo has finally launched a genuine successor to the original Switch. The Nintendo Switch 2, revealed during Nintendo’s Direct event, offers much-anticipated enhancements in display quality, performance, multiplayer functionalities, and accessories. Having had the opportunity to engage with the device at a press-only Nintendo event yesterday, and as someone who has tried every Switch model from the original to the Switch OLED, I’m excited to share my insights.

Nearly 6 Hours of Hands-on Time with the New Switch 2

The most impressive aspect of the new Switch 2 is that it feels like a definitive upgrade while maintaining enough familiarity that adapting to the new features feels effortless. Nintendo has successfully balanced innovation with a sense of continuity.

Make sure to check out the video below for an extensive, hands-on exploration of everything Switch 2, including a look inside yesterday’s private event in NYC!

  • Larger 7.9″ Display: The new screen is not only brighter but also sharper compared to the original’s 6.2″.
  • 1080p LCD Display with HDR: While it doesn’t feature OLED, it supports HDR and delivers stunning visuals.
  • 120FPS: The gameplay experience feels significantly smoother when supported (not all games will utilize 120FPS).
  • Joy-Cons 2: The new Joy-Cons attach magnetically for a secure fit, replacing the previous rail system.
  • Bigger SL/SR Buttons: An upgrade that greatly enhances comfort during gameplay, especially in single Joy-Con mode.
  • Dual USB-C Ports: Positioned on both the top and bottom for versatile charging and accessory usage.
  • 256GB Internal Storage: A massive improvement from the original Switch’s 32GB.
  • Improved Audio: Features louder and clearer speakers, along with a built-in microphone that incorporates active noise cancellation.
  • New Stand: Offers wider and more stable support with adjustable angles.
  • 4K When Docked: The updated dock includes a built-in fan for better thermal management.
  • Backward Compatibility: While not every game from the original Switch will work, the majority should be compatible with a list expected soon.

Hands-on Experience

As anticipated, the Switch 2 outshines the original in every possible aspect. The specifications alone confirm that each hardware element has been updated to align with 2025 standards. But does this translate into real-world enhancements? Absolutely, it does.

Several features stood out to me. The display, for instance, is magnificent in person—it’s sharp, vibrant, and fluid. Experiencing the new Mario Kart World felt like a generational enhancement, showcasing rich environments with fast, smooth performance. Additionally, the upgraded game itself has elevated the overall experience.

The revamped Joy-Con controllers are surprisingly commendable. Their magnetic connection is strong and satisfying, effectively eliminating the risk of slipping off. I put their strength to the test with a few shake experiments, and they remained firmly in place. Additionally, each Joy-Con now serves as a mouse, unlocking new gameplay possibilities. I explored this in Drag & Drive, a game simulating wheelchair movement with mouse-like precision—it’s incredibly intuitive and immersive. I also experimented with the mouse functionality in some Mario Party mini-games. While this feature is impressive as a demo, I doubt I would utilize it much beyond Mario Party sessions. Yet again, unexpectedly excellent!

Other Tidbits

One additional detail that’s worth mentioning is the new material of the Switch 2. It has a soft, rubbery texture that effectively reduces fingerprints and smudging. I believe this material will stand the test of time quite well.

You might also notice a new button on the right Joy-Con labeled ‘C.’ This is the new Chat button that immediately activates chat mode with friends online. You’ll be able to initiate audio calls, video calls, share your screen while gaming, communicate with multiple users, and game together while video chatting—all supported by the new Nintendo Camera. This was a significant feature that Nintendo emphasized for the Switch 2, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to community.

Accessories and New Features

Nintendo has also unveiled several first-party accessories that deserve mention. Two, in particular, caught my attention:

Nintendo Camera:

  • $50 webcam featuring an ultra-wide lens along with a physical privacy shutter.
  • Integrates seamlessly with Nintendo’s new chat functionality through a dedicated controller button.
  • Provides real-time facial feeds during games like Mario Party, including screen-sharing capabilities.
  • Compatible with all play modes: handheld, tabletop, or docked.
  • One camera can produce four live video feeds with head tracking.

The most astonishing part for me was the ability to simultaneously track up to four individuals in the same room using just one camera. It felt almost like magic.

New Pro Controller:

  • Enhanced ergonomics and weight for improved comfort.
  • USB-C charging for convenience.
  • New programmable back paddle buttons for customizable controls.
  • Exceptional haptics and a fingerprint-resistant finish for durability.
  • Priced at $80, which feels on the expensive side, but it is a well-constructed controller that lives up to its ‘Pro’ status.

Pricing & Availability

The Switch 2 is set to be officially released on June 5, with pre-orders commencing on April 9. Two variants will be available: one with just the console and the other bundled with the new Mario Kart World game. Additionally, Nintendo will roll out a series of first-party accessories, as detailed below.

Final Thoughts

Having spent nearly six hours interacting with the new Switch 2, I’ve determined that this is a significant and holistic upgrade that resolves many of the original Switch’s limitations. With improved display quality, heightened performance, a better build, and enhanced multiplayer capabilities, it appears that Nintendo has meticulously refined the console while avoiding drastic changes. They’ve introduced enjoyable new features, rolled out exciting new games I look forward to trying, and maintained the portable design that fans appreciate.

If you’re a seasoned Switch owner or someone who has been contemplating a purchase, this feels like an impactful next step and is clearly designed for both solo and social gamers.
