NVIDIA GeForce NOW Gaming Service Launches on Vision Pro Later This Month

The Vision Pro holds significant promise as a gaming device, but this potential has primarily remained unexplored. Today, an announcement from NVIDIA marks one of the initial indicators of forthcoming changes.

Game streaming service optimized for Safari on visionOS

As noted by MacStories, NVIDIA revealed that its game streaming platform, GeForce NOW, will be available on the Vision Pro later this month with the rollout of the new app update, version 2.0.70.

From NVIDIA’s announcement:

In partnership with Apple, Meta, and ByteDance, NVIDIA is broadening GeForce NOW cloud gaming support to spatial computers like Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3 and 3S, and Pico virtual- and mixed-reality devices. This will include all the advanced features of NVIDIA’s technologies, such as ray tracing and NVIDIA DLSS… Later this month, users of these devices will be able to access a vast library of games for streaming via GeForce NOW by simply visiting play.geforcenow.com.

It appears that instead of releasing a dedicated application for Vision Pro, NVIDIA will provide updates to enhance GeForce NOW’s performance in Safari on visionOS.

NVIDIA indicates that the Vision Pro and other VR devices will “support gamepad-compatible titles,” and members of GeForce NOW Ultimate and Performance tiers will have access to RTX and DLSS capabilities in compatible games, enriching the visual experience.

This news comes on the heels of a recent report by Mark Gurman suggesting that Apple and Sony are collaborating to integrate true VR gaming controller support from PlayStation VR2 into Vision Pro. The gaming narrative surrounding Vision Pro is gradually taking shape.

DMN’s Insight

Game streaming has faced challenges in gaining traction on Apple platforms, largely due to previous App Store policies that limited the availability of streaming apps.

However, nearly a year ago, Apple revised its App Store regulations to clearly permit game streaming applications. While we have yet to see a significant influx of developers bringing game streaming to Apple’s platforms, today’s announcement bodes well for future developments.
