NY to India Flight Diverted to Rome Due to ‘Suspected Bomb Threat’

An American Airlines flight heading to India was rerouted to Rome on Sunday due to a “suspected bomb threat,” which was later deemed unfounded , as confirmed by the airline and officials at the airport.

Officials at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport reported that they conducted security checks on the aircraft and all 199 passengers along with the 15 crew members of Flight 292 from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to New Delhi at the airline’s request. The security alert was lifted shortly after 9:00 p.m. local time, according to the airport’s information.

American Airlines stated to USA TODAY that the investigation found the matter to be “non-credible,” but it was a requirement of Indira Gandhi International Airport protocols to carry out the inspection.

The aircraft will stay in Rome overnight to allow for necessary crew rest, according to American Airlines.

The airport mentioned that passengers cleared for entry into Europe were transported to nearby hotels, while those who were not cleared were taken to designated airport lounges.

The Associated Press reported that two fighter jets were dispatched above the airport prior to the plane’s arrival. Law enforcement and fire departments were present on the tarmac when the aircraft landed, adhering to standard procedures.

“Safety and security remain our highest priorities, and we appreciate our customers’ understanding,” stated American Airlines in their communication.
