As highlighted last week, Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s global head of accessibility, took the stage at the Web Summit Lisbon 2024 this Tuesday. During her presentation, she discussed Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance device usability for all individuals and emphasized the role of AI in assisting those with disabilities.
Apple and Accessibility
According to iFeed.pt, Herrlinger pointed out that Apple has maintained a dedicated accessibility team since 1985. The company’s mission has been to establish accessibility as “a human right,” as it believes this approach “fuels innovation.”
At the Web Summit, she showcased artificial intelligence as a prime example of how technology can enrich the lives of individuals with disabilities. Herrlinger discussed features like Eye Tracking, which empowers users to control their devices solely with eye movements, and Sound Recognition, which helps those with hearing impairments detect alarms and doorbells.
With the enhancements to Siri through Apple Intelligence, using Apple devices hands-free is set to become even more seamless.
Another significant advancement, as noted by Herrlinger, is the AssistiveTouch feature on the Apple Watch, which allows users to operate and navigate their watch through hand gestures. This functionality has evolved to the point where any user with a Series 9 or later can take advantage of the Double Tap gesture for a touchless interaction with the interface.
Moreover, Herrlinger stated that Apple views accessibility in its devices as a means to combat social stigma. For example, the latest update to the AirPods Pro 2 equips users with clinical-grade hearing health capabilities embedded within the earbuds.
