The future without passwords is swiftly approaching, with over 200 organizations now incorporating passkey functionality into their platforms. This important development, highlighted by 1Password, indicates a significant transition towards safer and more efficient authentication methods.
1Password reveals insights on passkey implementation; major firms have adopted them
The roster of businesses utilizing passkeys has doubled compared to last year, now featuring prominent names like Walmart, Amazon, Target, Playstation, Discord, and Canva. For 1Password, this diversity of users demonstrates the broad applicability and attractiveness of passkey technology across multiple sectors.
For those who may not be aware, passkeys were introduced two years ago as a replacement for traditional passwords, utilizing a security key or biometric data for more secure authentication. This technology was developed through the collaboration of the FIDO Alliance along with giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft.
As a proud member of the FIDO Alliance, 1Password has shared compelling statistics regarding passkey adoption among its user base.
Specifically, over 4.2 million passkeys have already been stored within 1Password, with an average of 2.1 million passkey authentications each month. Approximately 1 in 3.4 1Password users possess at least one passkey, with 73% of these users being individual consumers.
These adoption statistics not only signify a crucial achievement for 1Password as we lead the charge towards a passwordless world, but they also reflect the confidence our customers have in us to deliver secure and dependable passkey solutions.
As members of the FIDO Alliance, we are dedicated to assisting more individuals and businesses in transitioning away from passwords to embrace a more secure and straightforward future.
Earlier this year, 1Password launched a new “Passkey Ready” tool that aids web developers in assessing whether their users can transition from traditional passwords to passkeys.
The FIDO Alliance has recently unveiled new specifications for passkeys that offer support for the seamless import and export of keys across various password managers. When it comes to iOS, this feature has been available in Safari since iOS 16 and was expanded to third-party applications with the release of iOS 17.
