Philips Hue Doorbell Leaked – But Comes with a Major Limitation

Recently, a new Philips Hue doorbell was unintentionally revealed by the company through an update to the Hue app. Philips already provides a variety of smart security cameras.

The information disclosed within the app offers a wealth of details regarding the device, which is not set to debut until fall, including a notable limitation …

Philips Hue Doorbell

The predictions made by Hue Blog’s Fabian about the product plan, name, and design appear to be quite accurate.

I can easily envision Philips Hue introducing additional components to the Hue Secure system this fall. Topping the list of possibilities is a video doorbell, which we can refer to as the Philips Hue Secure Video Doorbell […]

We can likely anticipate a traditional doorbell design featuring a camera at the top and a bell button with an LED ring at the bottom of the unit.

Just under two weeks later, a reader from the site identified the device in a recent update to the Hue app.

In the latest update, Philips Hue has rolled out a new QR scan feature for lamps, lights, and devices. However, the “no QR code” section not only lists familiar devices but also includes a “Hue Secure doorbell.”

Visual evidence confirms the design resembles the Ring doorbell closely, and the name identified is the Philips Hue Secure Doorbell.

The indication that a QR code is necessary hints at the implementation of encrypted video within the device, as the code serves to provide the encryption key to the app.

One Major Limitation

The app’s text also reveals that the doorbell will only be compatible with wired installations. Consequently, it can only be used to replace an existing wired doorbell, unless one is ready to lay down new wiring from scratch.

This stands in contrast to many smart doorbells that can function with a rechargeable battery, making them viable for rental properties that lack existing wiring.

It was suggested last year that Apple would also be entering the smart home camera market, although this move is not likely to occur until next year.
