Plex has revealed that a significant update is on the horizon for its iPhone application. This update includes a bold redesign featuring revamped navigation, enhanced artwork, and more. Additionally, the app has undergone a complete rewrite from the ground up.
Currently, the focus of this update is on the mobile experience, though Plex mentions that a redesigned TV interface is also on its way “very soon.”
According to a blog post by Plex, a primary focus of the new design is enhancing the navigation system:
A key change involves a redesigned navigation system, aimed at simplifying the exploration of different areas of Plex and making content discovery easier. Our extensive testing has shown that this new framework not only aids existing users in navigating intuitively but also provides newcomers with a clearer understanding of what Plex offers. We’ve moved our essential features into the spotlight, bidding farewell to hidden hamburger menus and facilitating easier one-handed browsing on mobile devices.
From a visual standpoint, the revamped Plex app showcases larger and more engaging artwork across the interface:
A standout aspect of the redesign is the increased incorporation of artwork throughout the app, which enhances visual richness and depth for users. You’ll particularly notice this in the detail pages for movies and shows, as well as cast and crew profiles, and even your personal profile page. We’ve also added title artwork for movies and shows where applicable—a long-awaited feature that adds a refined touch to each page. This is just the beginning; expect many more enhancements as we continue to evolve and beautify these pages.
Beyond aesthetic updates and new features, Plex emphasizes that this is a significant overhaul beneath the surface. The app’s architecture has been completely rewritten to unify platforms under a single codebase, paving the way for quicker development of updates and new features in the future.
For users managing their own media collections, the new Plex app includes a dedicated “My Library” tab. However, it appears there’s a marked emphasis on encouraging users to explore additional Plex features, such as its integration with other streaming services on the “Home” tab.
Plex is aware that this redesign is substantial, and getting the changes right is critical. As such, the new design is available today in an early-access preview, slated for a broader release to the public in 2025.
