Plex has revealed several exciting updates alongside its ongoing app redesign. In a recent blog post, the company disclosed a price adjustment for its Plex Pass subscription, as well as modifications to remote streaming capabilities for personal media.
Effective April 29, 2025, Plex has announced the following price changes for Plex Pass:
- Monthly: $6.99 (previously $5.99)
- Yearly: $69.99 (previously $49.99)
- Lifetime: $249.99 (previously $119.99)
This is the first price increase for Plex Pass in more than a decade. The organization stated that the increase is necessary “to keep pace with rising costs” while remaining “dedicated to ensuring both Plex Pass and our support for personal media continue to succeed.”
Plex has outlined three main initiatives for personal media users this year:
- An exciting integration with Common Sense Media offering extras for Plex Pass subscribers.
- A custom server management app designed for browser and mobile use, enhancing curation and visibility regarding server activity.
- A publicly available and documented API for server integrations, along with the ability to create personalized metadata agents.
Another significant update involves the remote playback feature for users streaming personal media outside their local network. Starting April 29, Plex will no longer offer remote playback as a complimentary service.
Importantly, if a server owner holds a Plex Pass, all users granted access can stream remotely at no additional cost. For instance, if you share a Plex server with family outside your home, they can still access content provided you have an active Plex Pass subscription.
Upgrading to any Plex Pass subscription is an excellent choice for server owners, ensuring that all users accessing the Plex Media Server can stream remotely without extra charges. Even for those without their own Plex Media Server, a Plex Pass subscription enables remote streaming from any server you have access to, along with additional features like Skip Intro and Skip Credits.
Plex is also launching a new subscription option called Remote Watch Pass:
The newly introduced Remote Watch Pass allows individual users to remotely stream media from any personal media server they can access. This option is tailored for users who don’t operate their own server but wish to stream from a friend or family member’s server that lacks a Plex Pass. It also serves as a more economical choice for server owners who don’t require all Plex Pass features but want remote access to their media. Beginning April 29, 2025, the Remote Watch Pass will be offered at an introductory price of $1.99/month or $19.99/year.
Lastly, Plex is eliminating its mobile unlock fee:
Previously, our Android and iOS apps required a one-time activation fee or a Plex Pass for users to lift the one-minute playback restriction when streaming content from a Plex Media Server. With these changes, there will no longer be a one-minute playback limitation. Streaming content over a local network will be free in the upcoming mobile apps. These alterations will take effect once the new mobile Plex experience is publicly launched, following its preview period.
