Prince George’s County Council Mulls ,000 Support for Displaced Federal Employees: Key Details to Understand

This week sees an increase in federal worker layoffs, as the Department of Health and Human Services plans to eliminate 10,000 positions as part of a significant restructuring initiative.

In addition to the layoffs, another 10,000 employees are accepting buyouts offered by the Trump administration.

In response, members of the Prince George’s County Council are suggesting that the county provide stimulus checks for those federal employees who have lost their jobs. There are concerns about whether the county can manage this financial commitment and whether it is equitable to others.

Councilmember Wala Blegay, representing District 6, has proposed this legislation which aims to offer $1,000 to each affected resident who has recently become unemployed from the federal workforce.

With tens of thousands already impacted, there is a fear that these layoffs might lead to an economic downturn and significant foreclosures within the county. There are over 70,000 federal employees residing in Prince George’s County, but the exact number of job losses remains unclear.

The legislation is named the “Federal Worker Emergency Assistance Act,” and as currently drafted, it stipulates that individuals who opted for voluntary buyouts will not qualify for these stimulus payments.

The council member informed 7News that she aims to keep the total under $2 million, as she recognizes the county is facing an approximate $200 million budget deficit.

“I understand the fairness factor, but I want to emphasize that the reason we are considering this instead of other options is due to the numbers. It’s important to note that during the pandemic, not everyone struggled with rent. However, the record high of those experiencing rental hardships prompted calls for financial support, and we are in a similar situation now,” Blegay stated.

The proposed one-time stimulus payments aim to offer financial assistance to individuals who have lost their jobs, providing essential support during a challenging period. The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee is set to examine the bill in a couple of weeks, particularly concerning funding mechanisms.

Following this, public hearings will occur before the council proceeds to a vote.
