PSA: iPhone Users Getting AppleCare+ Refunds Years After Trade-In

Users of Apple devices worldwide have begun to receive refunds for AppleCare+ on iPhones that they purchased and traded in several years ago. There doesn’t appear to be a specific trigger causing these refunds, as various cases have surfaced.

Email Communication Regarding AppleCare+ Refunds

Apple is issuing refunds for AppleCare+ on a range of recently traded-in iPhone models, including the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro. The email sent to affected users states the following:

Dear Customer,

Our records show that you qualify for a refund related to your AppleCare+ agreement (number) for the iPhone 12 Pro Max that you returned or exchanged.

A refund of $201.47 has been processed to the payment method linked to your Apple Account. Please allow up to 30 days for the refund to complete.

If you have questions or need assistance, please reach out to Apple Support.

Sincerely,

Apple Support

Different Refund Amounts Observed

Curiously, some individuals have reported receiving refunds that exceed the value of their unused portion of AppleCare+. Typically, AppleCare+ costs $199 for two years of coverage on iPhone Pro models, and $269 for theft and loss coverage. A refund of $201.47 seems excessive, assuming that the customer used their iPhone for a reasonable duration.

Additionally, Dylan McDonald shared on X that he was refunded $181.36 for AppleCare+ on his iPhone 12 Pro Max, even though he had only opted for the monthly plan. He did mention that he forgot to cancel his subscription for several months after trading in the device, but even then, the refund should have been around $40, not $200.

However, not everyone has had a positive experience, as several customers are receiving refunds as low as just a few dollars.

Conclusion

If Apple is unable to automatically process your refund, it is recommended that you contact Apple Support for assistance with a “Repair Extension Program Refund” form.

The exact reasons for these refunds remain unclear, but customers in both the US and UK are reporting receipt of such refunds. Many individuals have already seen the funds reflected in their bank accounts, indicating that the emails are not erroneous.

It’s important to note that customers have always had the option to call and request partial refunds on two-year AppleCare+ plans, but it seems that Apple is now developing an automated process for this.
