At the 80th Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday, Quinta Brunson, the creator of the popular mockumentary comedy Abbott Elementary, won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Series. Brad Pitt, who was a spectator, was among the persons Brunson recognized in her victory speech as having influenced her.

The ABC television series Abbott Elementary, which debuted in December 2021, follows a group of teachers as they deal with the ups and downs of teaching at a public school in Philadelphia. The show received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and was nominated for an 80th Golden Globe Award with The Bear (FX), Hacks (HBO), Only Murders in the Building (Hulu), and Wednesday (Netflix).

Abbott Elementary creator and actress Brunson has previously discussed her love of comedy and the inspiration behind the creation of the program. “I just wanted to have a wonderful program with decent people,” she told PEOPLE. In addition, Brunson talked openly about the difficulties in getting the program off the ground, claiming that although one other network failed to see its potential, ABC did.

When it was made known that Abbott Elementary had won a bid battle over other networks, Brunson called herself “lucky” and said she thought it was “a sign that things are changing.” It’s not a typical LA tale being a black creative.
