Regulators Deliver Major Setback to Tesla with Recall of Nearly All Cybertrucks

On Thursday, U.S. safety regulators announced the recall of nearly all Cybertrucks currently on the road, marking the eighth time Tesla’s vehicles have been recalled since they began being delivered to customers just over a year ago.

The recall, issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects over 46,000 Cybertrucks, highlighting the risk that an exterior panel on either side of the windshield could detach while driving, posing a serious hazard to others on the road and increasing crash risks.

According to the NHTSA report, the stainless steel piece, referred to as a cant rail assembly, is affixed to the vehicle’s structure with a special adhesive. The proposed solution involves using a different adhesive that the NHTSA has determined is not susceptible to ”environmental embrittlement,” and it will incorporate additional reinforcements.

Tesla will carry out the panel replacement at no cost to owners. Letters notifying them of the recall are anticipated to be sent out on May 19, 2025.

This recall affects 46,096 Cybertrucks, covering all models from the 2024 and 2025 years, manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. The NHTSA indicated that Tesla became aware of this issue earlier this year.

Recently, videos circulating on social media have captured individuals easily removing the panels from Cybertrucks with their hands, gaining viral attention.

Since Tesla began delivering the Cybertruck to customers in late 2023, the vehicle has faced eight recalls in the last 15 months due to various safety concerns. This includes a recall in November due to a malfunction in the electric inverter that could lead to a loss of power in the drive wheels, and last April’s recall addressing interior trim issues where acceleration pedals could become stuck. Other safety recalls dealt with windshield wipers and display screen problems.

This latest recall adds to the challenges faced by Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company, which has been the subject of criticism since President Donald Trump took office, leading to Musk overseeing a new Department of Government Efficiency tasked with reducing government expenditures.
