Thanks to a typically reliable source from iPhoneSoft, we might already have insight into device compatibility for Apple’s forthcoming major operating system updates expected next year.
The report indicates that all iPhone models currently compatible with iOS 18 will also be compatible with iOS 19, although, as in previous years, certain features may be restricted to newer models. This suggests that users with iPhones as old as the XS and XR, launched in 2018, will enjoy another year of software support.
On the other hand, some iPad models will not be eligible for updates to iPadOS 19.
Specifically, the 7th generation iPad, which runs on the A10 chip and was released in 2019, will not be able to upgrade to iPadOS 19, nor will the second-generation iPad Pro that debuted in 2017. Consequently, the minimum processor requirement for iPadOS will be raised to the A12 chip. Fortunately, most iPad users can expect a full additional year of updates featuring new software enhancements.
iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 are anticipated to be previewed for developers starting in June 2025, with a public rollout expected around September 2025. This means they will remain supported until September 2026.
Details on the features of iOS 19 are still unclear. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has hinted that extended development on iOS 18 features has somewhat delayed the schedule for iOS 19. Furthermore, iPhoneSoft suggests that iOS 19 may feature fewer significant updates compared to previous versions.
Another consideration is the ongoing updates in Apple Intelligence. Should many new features in the upcoming OS require Apple Intelligence, the effective hardware compatibility cutoff may be more recent.
It may appear premature to discuss iOS 19 when several significant features promised for iOS 18 have yet to be launched or even made available in the developer beta. Notably, this includes AI features like Priority Notifications on the lock screen, App Intents for in-app actions, personal context understanding, and enhanced on-screen awareness for Siri.
