Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is gearing up for a significant transformation to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone next year. Among the anticipated changes is the introduction of a foldable iPhone, along with a radically redesigned Pro model.
This new device aims to fulfill Jony Ive’s long-standing vision for the iPhone, which emphasized creating a design that “resembles a single sheet of glass.” This idea became very prominent with the introduction of the iPhone X.
Recent years have seen Apple releasing thicker and less streamlined iPhones, but it appears the company is now shifting back towards the sleek aesthetic that Jony Ive championed. This transformation is set to begin with the launch of the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air model later this year, continuing into next year with the 20th-anniversary Pro iPhone.
From the Power On newsletter:
However, the company is gearing up for a substantial overhaul for the iPhone’s 20-year celebration, which includes a foldable variant and an innovative new Pro model featuring increased glass usage.
An iPhone made with more glass may raise concerns regarding durability and repairability for many users, yet it aligns perfectly with Apple’s innovative approach. This kind of redesign makes complete sense as part of commemorating the 20th anniversary.
Previously, Gurman indicated that the iPhone 17 Air is merely the beginning of a trend towards all iPhones eventually adopting an ultra-thin profile. I envision Apple introducing both a slimmer and more glass-centric design for the iPhone 19 Pro, which would echo the goal of creating an iPhone that seems like a single sheet of glass.
Unfortunately, Gurman hasn’t shared specific design details beyond indicating enhanced glass utilization. The rest will be left to your imagination.
