Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter reveals that the supply of the current iPhone SE generation, which launched in 2022, is dwindling rapidly. This is not surprising as many anticipate the arrival of a new iPhone SE in a few months. However, this situation is particularly intriguing since it suggests that Apple may not intend to retain the existing model in their lineup.
Overview of iPhone SE 4
Apple is set to unveil a new iPhone SE this spring, likely around April. There are speculations that it may be called the iPhone 16E. This forthcoming model will feature the most significant redesign in the history of the iPhone SE, boasting an entirely new look, a 6.1-inch OLED display, an upgraded Face ID, USB-C connectivity, and several other enhancements.
The upcoming iPhone SE will also incorporate support for Apple Intelligence, introducing features like Genmoji and Notification Summaries to the entire range of Apple smartphones. Nevertheless, it is expected that this new model will come with a higher price tag, rumored to start at around $499.
Typically, Apple maintains older models at lower prices when launching new ones to cater to different market segments. For instance, they continued offering the M1 MacBook Air for a couple of years at a reduced price while the newer M2 MacBook Air was introduced at a $200 higher price point.
Inventory Status at Apple Stores
However, it appears that this may not be the case for the iPhone SE 3. While it would be beneficial for Apple to have a ~$300 iPhone to attract new consumers, this scenario is unlikely since production of the iPhone SE 3 seems to have already diminished:
The decrease in inventory is a clear indication that a new model is on the way. Yet, it also implies that Apple probably will not keep the current version available — at a lower price — once the new model is released. This could be a missed opportunity, as a more affordable iPhone could have helped Apple penetrate certain markets better. The existing SE retails for $429, and the soon-to-be-released model may be priced even higher due to its updated features.
Personally, I’m not particularly disappointed by this news. Even though a new iPhone priced below $400 would be enticing, it’s essential to note that Apple based the current iPhone SE on the 2017 iPhone 8. The iPhone SE 3 features an outdated technology foundation, although it comes with a competent chipset and decent cameras. Beyond that, it doesn’t compete effectively against Android devices in the $300-400 price bracket.
Additionally, Apple ceased the sale of the iPhone SE 3 within the European Union late last year. Due to the implementation of new USB-C regulations, Apple can no longer sell any Lightning-equipped iPhones, which includes the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE 3, in the European market.
If you are still interested in purchasing an iPhone SE 3 for any reason, it is still available for online ordering with delivery expected in just a few days. However, the in-store inventory of Apple Stores is becoming increasingly limited.
