According to a recent report, OpenAI may be set to expand beyond just ChatGPT as it appears to be developing its own social media platform.
‘X-like social media platform’ in development at OpenAI
Kylie Robison and Alex Heath report in The Verge that:
Sources indicate that OpenAI is in the process of creating its own social media network similar to X.
Although the initiative is still in its infancy, there is reportedly an internal prototype that integrates ChatGPT’s image generation features with a social feed. CEO Sam Altman has been seeking input from external parties about this project, according to our sources. It remains uncertain whether the social network will be launched as a standalone app or integrated into ChatGPT, which was the most downloaded application worldwide last month.
The report provides limited specifics, mentioning that one concept for the social application involves leveraging AI to “help users share better content” in a manner reminiscent of Grok. To date, we have not seen an entirely new social media platform built fundamentally around AI, which piques my interest.
The Verge also emphasizes that OpenAI has numerous projects underway, and this social media effort may never see the light of day.
However, in a fragmented market that hasn’t introduced a significant new player recently, OpenAI’s venture into social media has the potential to disrupt the current environment.
It’s quite a remarkable coincidence that ChatGPT recently surpassed TikTok and Instagram to become the most downloaded app globally last month.
