In line with other first-party applications that don’t support Dynamic Color theming, Google Maps has traditionally utilized a blue accent color for its buttons and interface elements. However, it seems this is set to shift to a teal hue.
Update 12/12: The new teal accent has started to appear on iOS (version 24.49.3), accompanied by the message “Google Maps has a new look,” which indicates it’s “the same great app, now with fresher colors.” It’s notable that Google felt the need for an introductory announcement regarding this modification.
Update 12/10: The teal accent color is being implemented broadly in Google Maps for Android. Noticeably, the blue has been eliminated from the floating action button (FAB), and the accent color for the selected tab has been updated, resulting in text labels changing from blue to black.
Old vs. new
Much like the FAB, a deeper teal shade is utilized for Directions in carousels, while a lighter version is used in other areas.
On various listings, Google has also revamped the blue icons throughout. After force-closing Google Maps (from App info), this is visible in version 24.49.06.x (stable + beta).
Original 11/13: Users are starting to notice the introduction of a teal accent color applied to the bottom bar and icons, such as directions and location, within Google Maps. Recent screenshots from Google Maps announcements prominently feature this trendy new color.
The teal accent is particularly noticeable when browsing listings, with buttons for Directions, Start, and others in the carousel being revised.
Old vs. new
It is still unclear why Google opted for a more subdued color scheme that strays from the brand’s typical blue, red, yellow, and bright green palette. We have reached out to Google for clarification. Meanwhile, Google Maps continues to refrain from using Dynamic Color on Android.
This server-side alteration has not yet been extensively rolled out on Android or iOS, and it coincides with the updated color palette for the map layer that was introduced around this time last year.
This follows recent design updates, including moving the corner weather widget to the bottom sheet and simplifying the bottom bar to just three tabs.
