A fresh rumor indicates that Apple may be working on a 90Hz display that could potentially be introduced in the upcoming iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display models.
This information surfaced from an unnamed source who contacted the Upgrade podcast, hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell.
At present, the iPad Air, the 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display all utilize displays with a 60Hz refresh rate. The rumor hints that the new 90Hz panel could debut with the M3 iPad Air and subsequently be incorporated into the 24-inch iMac and Studio Display.
Here is the complete statement provided to Upgrade by the anonymous whistleblower:
“I have insights into display enhancements planned for the next generation of the M3 iPad Air. Apple is developing a higher refresh rate LCD screen featuring a new liquid motion panel set at approximately 90Hz. There are also plans to extend this technology to additional models or products such as a 24-inch iMac and a next-generation studio display.”
Analyst Ross Young had earlier reported that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would boast ProMotion displays supporting 120Hz refresh rates. However, this marks the first mention of Apple’s purported efforts regarding 90Hz display tech for additional devices.
Per Bloomberg, the next-generation iPad Air is expected to be unveiled in early 2025. As for a new Studio Display, no definitive rumors have emerged yet regarding its launch. The 24-inch iMac was just refreshed last week, making its next update likely not before late 2025.
