While Apple may include a ‘high refresh rate’ in the base iPhone 17 and 17 Air models, it’s unlikely they will offer the full 120Hz ProMotion capability.
Supply chain insights provide limited information about the software capabilities linked to hardware.
Even if all iPhone 17 models share similar display components, Apple might reserve the full ProMotion functionality exclusively for the Pro and Pro Max variants, with the more budget-friendly models receiving a less impressive 90Hz option.
What will they actually decide? Only time will tell. However, it appears we may see the iPhone 17 range maintain a distinction between premium and budget segments, despite potential display upgrades for the cheaper models.
Could the iPhone 16E Replace the iPhone SE?
Apple’s upcoming iPhone is set to launch this spring with significant modifications to the iPhone SE. Leaker Majin Bu has indicated a potential name change for the device.
Instead of the iPhone SE, he suggests it will be rebranded as the iPhone 16E.

Considering Bu’s inconsistent history with leaks makes me cautious about this claim. Yet, my recent overview of the anticipated 2025 iPhones reveals that the new iPhone SE will likely share many characteristics with the iPhone 16.
Common features may include:
- A18 chip
- 8GB of RAM
- Apple Intelligence support
- 48MP primary camera
- USB-C port
The design might differ slightly, with the SE featuring a notch instead of the Dynamic Island. Overall, there will be numerous similarities.
However, I doubt Apple will actually implement this name change since the SE designation is already well-established, even extending to other products like the Apple Watch.
Nonetheless, if there ever was a year to rename the iPhone SE, this spring’s significant update may be the right opportunity.
