Introducing Rumor Replay, a new weekly segment at DMN that offers a brief overview of the latest Apple product rumors, complete with my insights and thoughts. This week’s edition covers: Apple’s upcoming ‘HomePad’ device, the anticipated release date for Vision Pro 2, changes to the iPhone 18 camera, and various other speculations.
‘HomePad’ may prove to be a highly appealing new gadget
The most significant rumor this week emerged from an extensive report by Mark Gurman about a new home device set to launch this spring, which I’m referring to as the ‘HomePad.’
This gadget is described as a smart display that can either be mounted or utilized with an external speaker base. Some anticipated features include:
- Enhanced focus on Apple Intelligence featuring an improved Siri
- StandBy-esque widgets, controls for the Home app, and additional functionalities
- Slideshow capabilities using the Photos app
- A built-in security camera along with audio/video intercom and FaceTime
- Functionality for Apple apps such as Safari, Music, and Notes
This appears to be the home device I’ve been waiting for from Apple.
It harnesses the main functionalities of HomePods, enhances it with Apple Intelligence and a smarter Siri, and encompasses even more: widgets, a security camera, slideshows, and additional features.
I’m excited that we won’t have to wait long for what feels like Apple’s first truly appealing mass-market home device.
On a related note, Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that Apple has plans for a smart home camera expected to arrive in 2026. This product seems more specialized and may be available at a lower price than the HomePad, while still providing similar security benefits.
What piques my curiosity is whether this indicates Apple’s roadmap to introduce even more smart home products, such as thermostats and smart lightbulbs.
Release Date for Vision Pro 2
As Apple continues to expand Vision Pro into new markets, reports indicate that the anticipated M5 Vision Pro 2 is already in progress. Mark Gurman has stated that the successor’s release is expected between fall 2025 and spring 2026.
In considering this new model, I’m particularly intrigued by advancements related to Apple Intelligence. There have been varying reports regarding whether the current Vision Pro has adequate computational capacity to support AI, or if the launch of the new M5 model will be crucial. Even though Vision Pro 2 won’t release for a year or more, I hope we’ll have clarity on these questions during WWDC in June.
Advanced Camera Features for iPhone 18
Although it’s still some time away, at least one premium model of the iPhone 18 is anticipated to feature a variable aperture camera, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. For a detailed understanding of the implications for photographers, my colleague Ben has provided an explanation. In essence, this may enable Apple to enhance its Portrait-like depth of field and significantly improve low-light performance.
AirPods are on the path to becoming health devices
The new hearing health capabilities for AirPods Pro 2 are significant; however, this seems to be just the beginning. Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple plans to follow its Apple Watch model by continuously integrating more health sensors into future AirPods. I’m fully supportive of this direction, as additional health features could make AirPods even more essential for users than they already are.
Resetting Expectations for iPhone 17 Air
Recent rumors suggest that Apple will not be able to implement the battery technology initially planned for the iPhone 17 Air. Consequently, the device may not achieve the ultra-slim profile that was originally anticipated.
The iPhone was unlikely to be as thin as the M4 iPad Pro; however, even with the substitution of a 6mm thick battery, Apple can still achieve noteworthy size reductions. The current iPhone 16 has a thickness of 7.8mm, while the 16 Pro measures 8.25mm. If Apple manages to drop below 7mm, it would represent a significant change, paving the way for even slimmer models in the years to come.
