Introducing Rumor Replay, a fresh weekly feature at DMN aimed at delivering a concise summary of the latest Apple product rumors, complemented by my insights and perspectives. Today’s topics include two upcoming MacBook Pro models with significant redesigns, Apple’s Vision roadmap, 90Hz displays, and more.

Below are this week’s Apple rumors.

MacBook Pro Redesign on the Horizon

The M4 MacBook Pro has just made its debut, yet rumors are already swirling about not one, but two upcoming models, featuring a significant redesign.

Mark Gurman has indicated that next year’s update to the MacBook Pro lineup is anticipated to resemble the M4 refresh—a primarily spec-enhancing upgrade, with the new M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max processors. While there might be some minor enhancements, a major transformation is scheduled for a later date.

In 2026, the M6 variant is expected to introduce a ‘complete redesign,’ unlike anything we’ve witnessed since the 2021 model. Gurman mentions that this next-gen MacBook Pro will likely adopt a ‘slimmer profile along with sharper OLED displays.’

Although it’s unfortunate to wait five years between redesigns, it’s likely that many pro users won’t mind after the butterfly keyboard fiasco from the last model.

The introduction of Apple’s M chips has enabled the company to produce thinner, faster devices. However, the recent MacBook Pro had a lot of shortcomings to address from its predecessor, resulting in it being relatively bulky. With a more robust base for development, the upcoming M6 redesign could be especially appealing.

Apple’s Vision Strategy

Vision Pro

Recent rumors reveal a lot of developments regarding Apple’s Vision platform. Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the less expensive, non-Pro Vision device has been postponed until ‘beyond 2027,’ while the M5 Vision Pro remains slated for release in 2025.

On another note, Mark Gurman has mentioned that Apple is seriously contemplating the creation of a pair of smart glasses and has initiated an internal survey to gather input from employees.

There appears to be considerable ambiguity within Apple regarding the direction of the Vision Pro. Simply upgrading the current device makes sense, but what comes after?

It’s understandable why a $2,000 headset may not significantly outperform the $3,500 version in sales. If so, how does Apple continue to expand the platform?

Smart glasses could present a viable path forward, but if that’s the case, the nascent state of the project implies a few years with just the Vision Pro available to gain traction, which could be a concern.

90Hz Displays in Development for iPad Air, iMac, and Studio Display

A source from the Upgrade podcast revealed that Apple is in the process of developing 90Hz displays for future models of the iPad Air, iMac, and a new Studio Display.

This development came as a surprise, even to display analyst Ross Young. There are few details regarding the timing of these anticipated updates.

90Hz could serve as a solid mid-range option for devices transitioning from 60Hz without fully offering the 120Hz ProMotion experience.

What raises my skepticism is that the base model iPhone 17 is projected to feature 120Hz ProMotion. It seems logical that if Apple is planning 90Hz displays, they should debut in the base iPhone while reserving 120Hz for the Pro models.

iOS 18.2 Release Date on the Horizon

iOS 18.2 beta coming when?

Mark Gurman reported that Apple is aiming for the week of December 2 for the public rollout of iOS 18.2, which would be a week earlier than their usual schedule.

Gurman also anticipated that iOS 18.1 would launch sooner than expected, a prediction that didn’t materialize. iOS 18.2 represents a significant update, and its public beta has just recently commenced. Considering the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, an early December release seems quite ambitious for Apple.

I believe the week of December 9 remains the most plausible timeframe, aligning with the patterns of prior years.

iOS Charging Estimates for iPhone

Our own Filipe Espósito shared that the beta version of iOS 18.2 contains hints of a new feature that estimates the time required to charge your iPhone.

This feature seems quite logical. Whether it appears in iOS 18.2 or not, it would be a valuable addition, especially as part of an enhanced Batteries widget for Lock Screens.

M4 Chips Powering New Apple Intelligence Servers

Lastly, Apple is reportedly discussing the establishment of new AI servers powered by M4-class chips with Foxconn. Currently, the company utilizes M2 Ultra chips for its servers in the Apple Intelligence Private Cloud Compute. Transitioning to M4 (likely Ultra) appears to be a logical progression for these new servers.
