Selena Gomez broke down in tears while discussing her struggle with lupus. The “Rare” singer, 28, spoke candidly about her health during the latest episode of Miley Cyrus’ Bright Minded Instagram Live talk show on Tuesday. Gomez was diagnosed with lupus — a disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own healthy tissue and cells — in 2013.

Selena Gomez began undergoing chemotherapy treatments shortly after being diagnosed. Gomez said Tuesday that the treatment took a toll on her body and caused severe side effects. “It’s something I had to find a way to balance out if I wanted to keep working at the pace that I was working at,” she explained. Takeaway: Gomez also revealed she underwent major surgery in 2017 to get a kidney transplant after doctors discovered her lupus had caused her kidneys to fail.

Selena Gomez Sheds Tears

Selena Gomez, who has been going through a difficult time in her personal life and career, broke down in tears while discussing her struggle with lupus.

The 25-year-old “Wolves” singer was diagnosed with lupus — a disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own healthy tissue and cells — in 2013. She began undergoing chemotherapy treatments shortly after being diagnosed.

During an appearance on Dr. Phil on Monday, she told host Dr. Phil McGraw she has bad days when her symptoms get worse, but that those moments are few and far between now compared to when she first started experiencing them nearly five years ago.

“I had lupus for five years, I’ve been on and off of chemotherapy treatments since 2013. My kidneys started to fail,” she said. “I had a kidney transplant in 2017 and things were looking up.”

However, her health took another turn when she began experiencing pain in her leg and doctors discovered that her immune system was attacking it again.

“It’s killing me slowly,” she said crying. “And I just want to live my life like a normal person.”
