DUBOIS COUNTY, Ind. (WFIE) – Authorities from the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office report that an individual fell victim to a scam involving bitcoin machines.
They indicate that the victim suffered a significant financial loss.
In a post on Facebook, it was revealed that the victim was using their computer when a number began flashing on the screen, prompting them to call for assistance.
Upon calling, the scammer claimed that the victim’s checking account had been compromised.
The victim was instructed to withdraw all funds from their account and deposit the money into a bitcoin machine.
According to deputies, the victim followed through and deposited the money into two different Bitcoin machines.
While still on the line with the scammer, the victim provided the required information about the Bitcoin and was assured that the funds would be refunded the following day.
However, the scammer then accessed the Bitcoin and took the funds.
The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office advises against sharing any personal or banking information.
Deputies recommend that individuals hang up and consult with a family member or law enforcement before proceeding with any actions.
