A new policy from the police may require you to visit your local Social Security Administration office rather than handling inquiries over the phone.
This week, the Social Security Administration declared its intention to put into place “stronger identity verification procedures” by the end of the month. These changes will affect benefit claims and alterations to direct deposits, necessitating millions of individuals nationwide to visit an office in person with proof of identity.
The forthcoming security measures will mainly impact those who do not have access to a “My Social Security” account, which requires online identity verification.
“Americans are entitled to have their Social Security records safeguarded with the highest integrity and diligence,” stated Lee Dudek, the acting commissioner of Social Security, in a press release on Tuesday. “For far too long, the agency has relied on outdated methods for identity verification. Social Security can enhance protection for Americans while also expediting service.”
Additionally, the SSA will start processing direct deposit requests, both online and in-person, within one business day, significantly accelerating the process. Previously, changes made online regarding direct deposits would be held for 30 days.
New Social Security Administration policy set to begin on March 31
Beginning March 31, the SSA will put in place both online and in-person identity verification processes. To support this transition, SSA will provide training for employees and managers on the new protocols and will monitor adherence.
Individuals unable to access the online “My Social Security” services can initiate their benefit claim via phone. However, claims cannot be completed until their identity is verified in person. Those lacking online access should call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an in-person appointment.
