According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the anticipated HomePod featuring a display will not be released until the third quarter of next year. Initially, it was expected to debut in the first half of 2024, but has since been delayed to the first half of 2025.
Kuo states that the delay is primarily due to unexpected challenges in software development for this new device.
HomePod with Display
Rumors about Apple’s development of a HomePod equipped with a display have been circulating since 2022. At that time, there were discussions about the device being a speaker paired with a magnetic docking station for an iPad.
Over a year ago, we were introduced to a prototype of the HomePod featuring an LCD screen, which our sources subsequently verified to be genuine.
Recently, photos of one of these prototypes surfaced online, confirming their authenticity. An Apple prototype collector named Kosutami shared images of parts from an unreleased HomePod, revealing a significant touchscreen sensor on top, much larger than the current HomePod. Kosutami also showcased a prototype that has a fully operational LCD display.
Parker Ortolani has created concept images that align with this (as seen in the photo above). Nevertheless, various reports suggest an integrated unit featuring a 7-inch display, akin to the Amazon Echo Show (shown in the top-right corner). Other speculations point to a design reminiscent of an iMac G4, although Bloomberg has indicated that this model may not necessarily incorporate a speaker, hinting it could be a separate entity. Additionally, there has been discussion about a wall-mounted version.
At this stage, it remains uncertain whether Apple is exploring multiple designs for a single device or if they are developing a series of smart home products.
Delayed Until Late 2025
Kuo now indicates that the launch of the HomePod with display has been postponed until Q3 2025 due to ongoing software development hurdles.
The timeline for mass production of the display-integrated HomePod has faced multiple delays. Originally expected for 2024 (as I had suggested in 2023), it was shifted to 1Q25 and has now been pushed to after WWDC 2025, targeting 3Q25.
This production delay is mainly attributed to challenges in software development. The display-equipped HomePod is anticipated to feature an A18 processor, a 6-7 inch display, and compatibility with Apple Intelligence.
Kuo posits that this forthcoming product represents Apple’s strategy to redefine the HomePod, shifting its role from merely a speaker towards a central hub for smart home management.
DMN’s Perspective
At the moment, it is difficult to ascertain what Apple aims to unveil, let alone when the launch will occur. Given that this marks the third timeframe suggested by Kuo, it is prudent to regard this report as further evidence that smart home initiatives are a significant priority for Apple.
