Sonos Set to Release a Competitor to Apple TV 4K, Price Tag Expected at 0: Report

Sonos has faced significant challenges over the past year. However, with a new interim CEO at the helm, the company is reportedly gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking hardware product: a competitor to the Apple TV 4K, expected to be priced between $200 and $400 and codenamed ‘Pinewood.’

Anticipated New Sonos TV Streaming Box Coming Soon

Chris Welch reports for The Verge:

Sonos is making a bold move into a new product segment: it will be venturing into video for the first time. In the upcoming months, Sonos is set to launch a streaming player with a projected price ranging from $200 to $400—a quite remarkable figure for this market.

The company intends to unify content from various platforms like Netflix, Max, and Disney Plus into a cohesive software experience. Users will benefit from universal search across different streaming accounts. This effort aims to address the fragmented entertainment landscape, distinguishing Pinewood as a standout offering. The product will include Sonos Voice Control and come with a physical remote that features shortcuts for popular streaming services.

Welch notes that the new device is “deep into development” and resembles a thick black square when viewed from above, similar in size to a deck of cards.

Additional information about the ‘Pinewood’ product includes:

  • functioning as an HDMI switch for connecting devices like gaming consoles
  • capable of “wirelessly transmitting lag-free TV audio to the company’s soundbars and other Sonos devices”
  • allowing the setup of a surround sound system with additional Sonos speakers
  • featuring a “stunning” interface

This announcement hints at a significant and ambitious endeavor for Sonos, which could markedly influence the company’s future, whether positively or negatively.

Welch’s article emphasizes that the launch is expected soon, so a full reveal shouldn’t be far off.

DMN’s Perspective

The Apple TV 4K has been scrutinized for its high price, though it has recently been adjusted to a more palatable $129 entry point.

Introducing a product at two or even three times that cost seems like a bold gamble for Sonos. Until full details of ‘Pinewood’ are released, I’ll reserve my judgment.
