Spotify Officially Discontinues Car Thing, All Remaining Units Cease Functioning

As previously reported, Spotify Car Thing has officially reached its end, with all devices ceasing operation as of today.

Introduced in 2022, Spotify Car Thing was the company’s initial foray into hardware. Featuring a straightforward display with a rotating knob and buttons, it connected seamlessly to both your phone and car, enhancing music control while driving. However, shortly after its launch, Spotify declared that it would stop producing and selling the device. Now, just two years later, the service has officially stopped supporting existing units, advising users to dispose of their devices.

Today marks the anticipated demise of Spotify Car Thing.

Earlier this morning, owners of Car Thing noticed their devices had gone inactive. Numerous reports surfaced on Twitter/X, showing that the device now powers on only to present a notification stating it is “no longer operational,” along with details about refund eligibility, which concludes in January.

Car Thing has been discontinued and is no longer functional.

Thank you for being part of this journey, and we wish you safe travels. For additional information, please visit carthing.com. Contact customer service by January 14, 2025, to explore your refund options.

With the foundational elements that powered Car Thing now removed, the device may still hold potential for other uses. Enthusiasts are exploring innovative ways to repurpose the hardware for different functionalities, despite its limited capabilities for running Android effectively. This is made possible by the open-source files that Spotify had previously released.

Farewell, Car Thing. You were appreciated, despite your questionable utility.
