To reach millions of Americans who have yet to claim benefits like Stimulus Checks, the increased Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit, the IRS said it started sending the letters in mid-October.
To get the funds, those who qualify must submit a tax return by the close of business on Thursday, November 17th, according to the IRS. The IRS announced that the filing website would be open until Thursday at midnight E.T.
The IRS used tax returns to assess eligibility and where to send payments when distributing billions of dollars in stimulus grants to keep households financially afloat throughout the pandemic. Tax returns contain bank account details or home addresses for sending the check.
Because they failed to submit a 2021 tax return, roughly 9 million Americans have yet to claim their Stimulus Checks according to the IRS.
People who qualify may file a tax return even if they didn’t receive a letter, according to the IRS. The agency also stated that even if a taxpayer files their tax return beyond the standard April 2022 deadline, there is no penalty.
