Next on the list is ‘WTF’, which scores 32.2 for extinction. This expression typically conveys emotions like disbelief, confusion, or shock, but many social media users argue it has lost its impact due to overuse.
4 – Skull emoji (💀)
The skull emoji follows closely with a score of 30.1. Often humorously used to express ‘I’m dead’ in response to hilarity, it has been claimed to have lost its playful connotation, now merely indicating mild amusement.
Similar to the phrases above, users assert that this emoji is applied so broadly that it has become diluted.
5 – Pleading emoji (🥺)
The pleading face ranks fifth on the list, holding an extinction score of 29. This emoji expresses a range of sentiments from affection to hurt, but many feel it is now just an attention-seeking device.
As one user noted, “Using the pleading face emoji just feels like an overused way of asking for attention.”
6 – ‘FOMO’
The acronym ‘FOMO’, which stands for ‘fear of missing out’, is next on the list with a score of 28.4. Although it evokes feelings associated with social anxiety over missed events, users feel it has shifted from expressing emotion to merely being a trend.
7 – ‘SMH’
In seventh place is ‘SMH’, standing for ‘shaking my head’, which garners an extinction score of 26.7. This phrase, often mistaken for ‘so much hate’, expresses frustration or disappointment but has reportedly lost its impact.
8 – ‘IKR’
Next in line is ‘IKR’, meaning ‘I know right?’, with a score of 26.6. Many users now question whether this expression genuinely adds to conversations or simply fills awkward silences.
9 – Thinking face emoji (🤔)
The thinking face earns the ninth position with an extinction score of 26.2, with many users claiming it no longer signifies profound contemplation and has become overused.
10 – Snake emoji (🐍)
The snake emoji rounds out the list as the last one expected to fade away by 2025, scoring 26. Traditionally used to indicate untrustworthiness, users now see it as a generic response, lacking specificity.
