Ever wondered what a Windows Phone, particularly the Lumia 1020, would look like running iOS? I hadn’t either, but this project is indeed fascinating. It’s quite rare to see iOS functioning on such different form factors, which certainly captured my attention.
On the r/hackintosh subreddit, a DIY enthusiast shared their creation: an iPhone SE 3 ingeniously modified to fit within the casing of a Nokia Lumia 1020. While that phone was distinctive, its practicality has diminished since Windows Phone is no longer supported.
When I mention it has the internals of an iPhone SE 3, I mean every component—like the 12MP rear camera, taptic engine, and Touch ID sensor—has been seamlessly integrated into the Lumia 1020’s body. SIM card tray? Confirmed. Flash? Present. 5G connectivity? Yes, it works.
The Lightning port has also been incorporated, which might seem like a drawback, but given that the Lumia 1020 originally used microUSB, it’s an enhancement. To maintain the Lumia 1020’s aesthetic, the Touch ID has been repositioned to the back of the device.
The Lumia 1020 featured a dedicated camera shutter button, akin to the Camera Control concept on the iPhone 16. Naturally, integrating an additional button into the iPhone while ensuring software compatibility is a challenge. Nevertheless, the creator managed to keep it functional.
Instead of a traditional shutter button, it has been repurposed as a secondary volume down button, allowing users to capture photos while in the camera app. Quite the innovative workaround, if you ask me.
In summary, all essential features of the Nokia Lumia 1020 have been retained, and I’m genuinely amazed that this was achieved. It’s a clever little project, with the headphone jack being the only significant loss.
