Bill Lawrence is the mind behind three of the most acclaimed shows on Apple TV+ so far: Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and Bad Monkey. In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, he has shared exciting insights about the forthcoming seasons of Ted Lasso and Shrinking.
What to anticipate from Ted Lasso season 4
During the interview, Lawrence was questioned about the reasons behind bringing Ted Lasso back for a fourth season, given that the show was initially envisioned as a trilogy.
One thing Jason [Sudeikis] has always emphasized, without giving too much away, is that the arc we crafted for the first three seasons had a definitive structure; it had a beginning, middle, and end. You saw his journey and his return home.
Despite this framing, Lawrence looks to co-creator Jason Sudeikis for hints on what season four might entail:
I can’t speak on his behalf, but it’s intriguing to think that there are always more narratives to explore with beloved characters, although it would be a different tale. It feels like a kind of self-reboot. I believe Jason has had another narrative in mind for quite some time.
It seems the approach for Ted Lasso’s continuation isn’t entirely new; rather, it stems from an idea that Sudeikis has been nurturing.
Insights into Shrinking season 3 and beyond
Fresh from airing the season 2 finale of Shrinking, the team, led by Lawrence, is already immersed in crafting season 3.
We conceptualized this series where the first season centers on grief, the second on forgiveness, and the third on moving forward.
Lawrence provided some hints about season 3:
- He expressed a desire to have Michael J. Fox guest-star on the show.
- He hinted at Cobie Smulders returning as a romantic interest for Jimmy.
- Plans include Alice and Sean relocating, forcing Jimmy to adapt to this new phase in his life.
Some of Lawrence’s remarks contain spoilers from the Shrinking season 2 finale, which are omitted here, but you can find the full details in the interview.
Another thrilling aspect relates to the potential for a fourth season of Shrinking:
One exciting element we are working on in the writers’ room for Season 3 is incorporating Easter eggs hinting at the new storyline for Season 4. Streaming allows us to create a three-season narrative arc that has a start, middle, and conclusion. If viewers connect with the characters, there are numerous stories left to tell.
It seems that Shrinking might follow in Ted Lasso’s footsteps, establishing a three-part initial narrative that opens the door for further adventures in season 4 and beyond.
