The Apple TV App Is Now on Android: Enjoy Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass

Update: The app compatible with phones isn’t currently appearing in the Google Play Store, but it should be available soon.

The Apple TV app is now accessible to Android users. It has officially launched on the Google Play Store for Android phones and tablets, enabling users to subscribe to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass directly from their devices for the first time.

Within the app, users can either log in using their existing Apple Account or create a new one and subscribe via Google Play billing. The rollout is ongoing, and it supports devices running Android 10 or newer.

This app incorporates essential features familiar to Apple device users, such as the Continue Watching queue, offline downloads, and search functionality. Viewers can sync their playback progress across all devices, meaning they can start a show on their TV and finish it on their Android phone in bed.

That said, the app currently focuses on content from Apple TV+, MLS Season Pass, and MLB Friday Night Baseball, meaning that iTunes Store purchases and rentals are not available in this app, nor can users access their previously purchased library.

On the upside, this results in a cleaner user experience with a straightforward layout featuring four tabs: Apple TV+, MLS, Downloads, and Search. On tablets, this interface is displayed in a floating sidebar format.

Rather than merely replicating the iOS app, Apple has utilized native Android UI elements, such as context menus activated by long-pressing items. However, as a version 1.0 release, it lacks features like notifications and casting support.

While there has been an app for Google TV devices for several years, this marks the first time the Apple TV app is offered natively on Android smartphones and tablets. Previously, those wanting to watch Apple originals on non-Apple mobile devices had to settle for a subpar web app.

Starting today, the Apple TV app for Google TV will also allow users to subscribe to TV+ and MLS Season Pass using Google Play billing, addressing a previous inconvenience where users had to create accounts and subscribe on other devices first.

This launch is both meaningful and notable, underscoring Apple’s commitment to ensuring that Apple TV+ thrives as an independent service rather than just an addition to the ecosystem.

If you haven’t tried Apple TV+ yet, you can sign up for a seven-day free trial through the Android app — and don’t forget to check out our comprehensive guide to all the content available on the service.
